You can soften it up with water, then use the auger. but you don't want to flood the holes.

Take your time, don't drive the bar down too hard, just kind of drop it and lift it back out.
Make sure the blades on the power auger are sharp as well. You'd be surprised what a huge difference that makes.

Fence around a garden,
we need a depth of 2 ' for the post at 6" we run into 18" of clay we have rented a one man gas powered auger 6" and a drill with a 18" bit for speed drilling we use the drill to dig 6'' down with about 10 holes then the auger will take out 1/2 of that .we worked all day in the sun an we got 4 done and 10 partly done, I need some thing that will dig into the clay. any help would be fantastic thanks Bob usmcnam1968@comcast.net

• This worked really good but as soon as I sat on the augar a extra 200 lbs made a big differance. thanks for your help

Get a 5' or 6' straight wrecking bar with a pointed tip. Use this to break up a few inches of clay and then dig it out. Repeat. Take your time, don't drive the bar down too hard, just kind of drop it and lift it back out.
