I have read a testimonial that if you sprinkle the Tide powder on the roof, during a dry period, it will kill the moss. It takes a couple of weeks, then you can get back up on the roof and sweep off the dead moss.
You may want to look into getting a zinc strip put on the peak of your roof. Lots of people seem to have good luck with that. The zinc is a poison to the moss. A preventative measure that many thoroughly believe in.
If you don't have 2 wks of guaranteed rain-free time, you may want to try this product: Safer Brand Moss and Algae Killer & Cleaner. Costs about $50 for an average roof size.
Clorox bleach will work as well, but it can damage plants where you have runoff.
You can apply both of the last two products with a backpack or other type of sprayer.

Edit- I need to pay more attention to the questions. I just realized that you wanted to know if it works without bleach. I'm pretty sure that the bleach is what's doing all of the killing of the mold here. I doubt that it is going to work very well without bleach.

Does Tide Soap (w/o bleach) kill moss on roofs?
It's said to pour a strip across the roof at its highest point. When the rain
comes, the soap will work its way down, killing the moss. Will this work?

Wikihow has a page on how to remove mold from wooden decks that uses Tide with Bleach. I can't imagine it being much different. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_2TJIiNNhT2I/SYsZHaOImzI/AAAAAAAAADk/DhcFH2WLgHY/s400/Tide.png
