Does anyone know of any good outdoor plants for the winter in the Northeastern US?

All of the annuals and the mums have already been claimed by frost even though technically it's still Fall here in the Northeastern US. Can anyone suggest what I can put in their place so that my flower beds retain some color for the Winter?

Holly plants are one of my favorite. There are various kinds, the most popular being English holly and American holly. They offer a touch of color and do well in cold climates.
