I would personally recommend using peppermint oil around the inside of your windows and doors. It is natural and not harmful to pets and kids. Apply it with a cotton ball. It works wonders and smells a lot better than toxic chemicals I don't want around my family and pets. You can even use it around your car windows in the spring and summer to keep spiders from entering cracked open windows!
I have heard that vinegar works the same, but pepperment oil smells soooo good!!
Salt also helps, as they will carry it back to the nest and dehydrate themselves and they die.

Diatomaceous earth works well. It is a powder that you apply outside of your home. Sold at garden centers as ant/earwig killer.
