St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born in Scotland, in 387 and died at Saul, Downpatrick, Ireland, on 17 March, 461. Patrick was captured in a raid at age 14 and taken to Ireland where he was kept as a slave until his escape at age 20. During his captivity he became more and more pious. Following his escape and return to Britain he studied and became ordained. He then returned to Ireland in 433 and began converting thousands of pagans, building many churches. - http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=89
"St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17, his religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over a thousand years." - http://www.history.com/content/stpatricksday/history-of-the-holiday

Because that is the anniversary date of the death of St. Patrick in 493 AD. For over 1,000 years Irish families have celebrated March 17 as St. Patrick's feast day. This date also nicely coincides with the season of Lent in Christianity, which gave followers further cause for worship and celebration. So in one form or another, the March 17 date for St. Patrick's Day has been a Christian-world tradition for almost a millennium!

According to the Catholic Church, which sets the dates for their holidays, that's the date St Patrick died. Therefor, they made it his feast day. However, as their Holy Week moves around and sometimes conflicts, they sometimes move St Patrick's Day. To the best of my knowledge no one else has offered different opinion on St Patrick's Day. The Anglicans agree that it should be March 17 so the Orange parade the same day as the Green. The Lutherans agree as well. The Coptic Christians have a quite different calendar but I don't think they have a St Patrick. The last time it was moved was to March 15 in 2008. The next time it is expected to be moved is in 2160.
