Briefly, buy it fresh and keep it watered.

The fresher the tree is to start with, the longer it will stay fresh. If you can cut your own, or find a place where it was cut within a day or two, that will help.

Second thing is cut an inch or two off the bottom of the trunk when you set it up. This ensures that the tree will be able to absorb water.

Give the tree lots of water, a gallon to start, and check the water level every day.

Avoid hot, dry, or drafty areas when setting up a tree. Don't set it up by the heater. This will reduce the life of your tree.

Some sources say to spray the tree with something to help it last longer, but I'm wary of this as a possible increased fire hazard, possibly adding toxicity to the tree if kids are by it. I don't think it's necessary.

Don't cut it down!

Buy a small baby tree in a base, decorate it and then go plant it!

Better to have a small tree and replant it in your yard or in a park.

I bought my tree on Black Friday this year and drop a aspirin in it every three days, it's still as fresh as it was the first day I brought it home!
