Home Alone
A Christmas Story
The Muppet Christmas Carol
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Bad Santa
The first three are great for the whole family, Christmas Vacation is more for the teenager and up crowd, and Bad Santa is absolutely adults only (but very, very funny).

There are a lot of great TV specials to choose from, but if I'm choosing from theatrical releases I'd have to say:Home Alone
A Christmas Story
The Muppet Christmas Carol
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Bad Santa
The first three are great for the whole family, Christmas Vacation is more for the teenager and up crowd, and Bad Santa is absolutely adults only (but very, very funny).

Definitely 'A Christmas Carol' with Albert Finney in the Scrooge role. It's a musical, the tunes rock (especially 'Thank you very much'). And the best 'Ghost of Christmas Past' ever.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3j4jBIhCIVE

I tend like movies that are set during Christmas but not directly about Christmas like Die Hard and Gremlins.

Amazon (rates "It's a Wonderful Life" best) and AOL (rates "A Christmas Story" best) have great lists of Christmas movies. I prefer "Love Actually". It's perfect for Christmas and you get to see Hugh Grant dance. It will definitely lift your spirits and put you in the holiday mood.

"It's a Wonderful Life" is hands down the best movie about Christmas that was ever filmed. The whole story reflects the ultimate message of giving, which is one of most compelling sentiments of the entire holiday. George Bailey spends his whole life giving and giving and giving, and when he feels like he's at the end he's shown just how much is selflessness has really done to make the world a better place. It's a very powerful display of self-sacrifice and appreciation.

I'm with Darcy. I like my Christmas Movies to be classics--the Bishop's Wife and Shop Around the Corner and Miracle on 34th Street (1947). I like Holiday Affair, with Robert Mitchum and Janet Leigh. But my favorite is Desk Set, with Hepburn & Tracy, which has a Christmas party right at the center of the movie. I just found this great clip from it: Permalink | Report
