Hide some gold under a box, and hold it up on one side with a stick. Attach a string to the stick and wait. If you move or talk at all they'll hear you and won't go for the gold. When he runs under the box, tug the string.
Be careful. Sometimes they can get away without your notice.

Since they love gold, you might try to entice them with gold (or, my son tried a rock painted gold).
You might want to try a version of "Live mouse trap" idea:

When the ball falls, it will squish the leprechaun. Now he can't get away.

What's the best method to catch a leprechaun?
We're constructing the annual St. Patrick's Day leprechaun trap. If we catch one he must give us his (or her) 'pot of gold'. Do you have advice. Thanks.

Leprechauns are VERY crafty. (They pee green into our toilets every SPD.) Since they love gold, you might try to entice them with gold (or, my son tried a rock painted gold).

The link did not work for me. We did consider using our humane trap though, thanks for the response. In the end a home made shoe box trap almost did the trick, but we'll wait and see again next year...

Place a bowl of lucky charms in the middle of a field. When the leprechaun picks up the bowl, a string is pulled, popping out a magnet that is holding 3 Mentos in the neck of a bottle of Diet Coke. When the coke spurts, it lifts one side of a see saw, which causes the other side to drop, striking a bowling ball in a wooden corridor. The corridor reaches all the way back to the bowl. When the ball falls, it will squish the leprechaun. Now he can't get away.
