I think you are refering to the holiday called Nowruz- the Iranian New Year.
It is a New Year celebration from ancient Persia, and now takes place in modern Iran and other Islamic countries. It is a time when family and friends get together, give each other gifts and look forward to the year ahead.
In ancient calendars New Year always started in Spring and now is the time of the Spring equinox. In 1582 the start of the year was fixed to January 1 but many countries continued to start the year in March.
