More and more, though, charitable groups (like "Toys for Tots" or "Secret Santa") are actually collecting these letters and trying to help out some of the kids who send them with gifts or holiday surprises.
There are even some private businesses set up that will send kids personalized letters from the North Pole answering their requests. One I've read about recently is "The North Pole Secretary."

Most of them probably wind up at a Mail Recovery Center, better known as a "Dead Letter Office."More and more, though, charitable groups (like "Toys for Tots" or "Secret Santa") are actually collecting these letters and trying to help out some of the kids who send them with gifts or holiday surprises.
