Growing up, my dad and brothers always put together a train set that circled the tree. Each year Santa would bring my brothers a new car for the train. Personally, I have not carried on this tradition, but it was always neat to watch them do.
I have snowmen everywhere. I love snowmen, so come Black Friday, while everyone else is out shopping, I'm decking the halls with Snowmen. I also have French doors separating my office from the living room, so I've started a tradition of stenciling snow flakes and snowmen on the windows. Living in the Northeast, it wouldn't feel like the holidays without at least hints of snow.

What decorations are essential for Christmas besides the tree, stockings and a wreath?
I'll admit, I'm looking for ideas for a Mahalo article. My mother loves Christmas and actually had a room filled with Christmas decorations in our attic. Consequently, I don't decorate for Christmas having been forced every year on the Friday after Thanksgiving. I've also lived my entire life in the midwest, so I'm a little curious if there are some decorating traditions out there that I might not be familiar with.

When our children still lived at home, the first decoration that was set up was the nativity scene. We left the creche empty and Jesus miraculously appeared in it on Christmas morning. Before opening presents, we would read the story of Christ's birth.
