Within the confines of adulthood, I don't think Santa Claus is really needed. Any actual adult who sincerely believes in Santa is probably at a mental handicap.

As a child, I think it is reasonable to belive within limits. I think at the age that the child starts to seriously question the existance of Santa we should not waste all our efforts continuing the belief, but we should educate them about how Santa can be a representation of giving and the spirit of the holidays.

I think that if I were to have children, I wouldn't encourage a believe in Santa Claus. Kids shouldn't be brought up with the high expectations of unrealistic gifts, like asking Santa for a pony, nor should they deal with the crushing disappointment when they realize that their parents are responsible for the gifts, which I think would just make them question of what else they've been told that's false.

As magical as childhood wonder is, the magic of everyday life and the love of your family is that much better.

I don't see why not. I never have because my strict Christian parents just told me straight up that he wasn't real and that anyone who believe he is is an idiot. Which got me punched a lot at school, but I dealth with it. In any case, I say let your kids believe and let them enjoy their youth.

Santa is a fun and harmless fantasy for kids to have.

I have thought about this for when I have children. Will I want to try to make my children believe in a Santa Claus? I'm not exactly leaning toward this route. There is no doubt that the whole Santa Claus thing is fun, however, children are becoming smarter and smarter these days. Long story short I think it would be best to still follow the procedure of Santa Claus (bring out presents in the middle of the night for the kids to see the next morning), however when they are old enough to understand the procedure, make sure they understand who really is the one bringing out the presents. It would still be a surprise to them.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. Santa Claus is a concept, principles in action by many people. Santa can exist in all of us to some extent or another. Belief in Santa can give a great example to children of the good that can be done by individuals. It can teach kids to be loving and giving, unconditionally. He would be one of many examples of this, but one that rests in the fantasies and dreams of children.

For fun, yes. As long as kids know he's fake and Christmas is a religious celebration.
