The egg laying bunny was developed as part of the Cadbury Creme Egg advertising campaign in 1988. Their television commercial featuring a clucking bunny captured the attention of the world, and has become an Easter time favorite.

From the source...

"...the persuasive and adorable clucking bunny is one of the factors that made me want to purchase Cadbury Creme Eggs. How can you resist a treat that comes from the Easter Bunny, after all? It is even more difficult when you are an impressionable child and the cute bunny is offering you chocolate. This is an example of good food advertising (in all its retro glory), with a likable icon and a simple, tasty presentation of the product..."

According to Wikipedia:

The Easter Bunny is a mythical character depicted as an anthropomorphic rabbit. In legend, the creature brings baskets filled with colored eggs, candy and toys to the homes of children on the night before Easter. The Easter Bunny will either put the baskets in a designated place or hide them somewhere in the house for the children to find when they wake up in the morning.

Its origin is disputed but the character was mentioned as early as 1600; some trace it to alleged pre-Christian fertility lore
