How did National Pie Day become a "holiday"?

This is an odd yet interesting question.... National Pie Day started in 1986 according to http://www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/January/nationalpieday.htm So to be exact January 23rd 1986.

Basically just an excuse to make and eat pies and not feel guilty about gaining the weight lol.
