How can you get a holiday recognized nationally?

How could the glory that is today, April 8th, eBook Day, be spread to the masses?

Obviously it wouldn't be a major holiday, but there're holidays like False Confessions Day (November 21).
And Cable TV has its own month (September)! I think the eBook is more deserving than television!

I really like the idea of a real eBook Day. How can we make it happen?

Although you want the holiday recognized nationally, it may be best to start smaller. You can use the web to gain publicity nationally and even internationally. But, to get official recognition you would want to start at lower, more accessible levels of government. Most national holidays spend some time as state holidays first and only become national when a lot of states have them. State legislators are notorious for having time on their hands and passing inane measures without even reading them. It is also possible you would more easily start with a municipal declaration made by your mayor or city council. Then work your way up.

Personally, I don't think you will get very far with ebook day. It just doesn't seem to lend itself to holiday activities. And, it's hard to posit some political or economic motive for politicians to sponsor it.

The only thing I can think of is to:

1. Create a really dramatic, almost silly (think Earth Day or Range Rover commercials) eBook Day video and distribute it on YouTube.
2. Try to create petitions to have it officially recognized.
3. Create a website glorifying the eBook, along with all of the information one needs to celebrate the holiday on their own.
4. Market the holiday from now until next year and try to bring in large corporate sponsors.
5. Hah, get Jason's blessing to spread the first Mahalo-created holiday.

I can do most of this. Too bad ze Germans have registered ebookday.com. I guess I'll have to settle for .org, unless you can think of a better idea.

Now, now, mrnemo, don't be so hasty. As you say, there is still that org domain available.
The best way to get ebook day recognized is to contact your congressman. They typically have all kinds of days that they like to recognize so that the people who are promoting those days are willing to vote for them. They introduce a resolution on the floor, all their buddies dutifully vote for it and presto! we have a new day. Then they get the President to sign a proclamation.
We just need to get President Obama to sign a proclamation recognizing April 8 as ebook day. That's all there is to it. Well, he does need to do a youtube video thanking all the folks at mahalo.com for their efforts.

Get a bill introduce in Congress. It will be a slow process, but - with enough support - there is a path to success.

Contact Amazon and Sony, to make it happen.
They will be willing to spend some money on this, as it helps in selling Amazon Kindle and Sony PRS-500.
