If someone's into that, sure, that would be a cool gift idea. In general, I don't think it's a bad idea; a fun little thing that someone could send out to learn some things about their family tree. Of course, last I remember, the whole process costs like $100 or something, doesn't it? That would probably make it too expensive for a gift unless it's someone fairly close to you. Then again, if someone's that close, then you probably already have a better idea of something specific they'd want.

What might be a good idea is to find a creative way to present a gift such as this... maybe a secondary gift of a small map or globe, a frame or something else exotic, that would reveal this major gift of the DNA testing.

DNA Testing - Would you like or hate this gift?
This probably sounds like a strange gift idea but would you like or hate it if someone gave you a DNA kit as a gift? This is not the type for genetic mutations or disese but rather the ancestry type for someone who has expressed an interest in the past. They are older and were adopted in another country so have very little to go on about their past. Feedback???

I think that would be a fantastic gift that could lead the person on a whole adventure to truly find out about their past. Depending on what they find out and how seriously they take it, it could change their life significantly and be the most memorable gift they ever received. And I disagree with eduardoraad that it would not be good for a girl. Females are as into 'geeky/engineering/nerdy' things as guys ... not to mention, this isn't actually geeky/engineering/nerdy.

I would make sure the recipient at least has some interest in their past before gifting this. I would like it, but I know some people that only look forwards and don't care at all where they came from. Some people are just creeped out by it because it feels like playing god.

Personally, I think it would be unusual, very creative, and thoughtful as well, since these aren't necessarily cheap. You would have to know the person well, though, before doing something like this, especially if they have any concerns about privacy and other similar issues, since they will have to provide cheek cells for the testing to occur. What might be a good idea is to find a creative way to present a gift such as this... maybe a secondary gift of a small map or globe, a frame or something else exotic, that would reveal this major gift of the DNA testing.
