My favorite one ever (and topical, too): at last year's West Hollywood Halloween Carnival, this guy put on makeup and strapped on a background and placard to look like the iconic Shepard Fairey poster of Obama:

My husband went as an aquarium one year. He built it from clear acrylic, and got a tube of fish from a museum store that he hung from the top. He even had a filter and a scuba diver! He cut a hole in the bottom and put his head through, and then made a stand from a box and wood-look shelf liner.
Twice he's gone as a stack of boxes: once with a laundry basket on top (to a home party) and another time without. Both times, he arrived early and just went and stood in a corner. Then he'd wait until someone approached and either move or start talking. It was hilarious! He won the contests all three times (with the aquarium above included).
I wish I had pics of any of these, but I don't have them in an accessible format.

My favorite idea: one of my sisters-in-law went as "Stinkerbelle". She was all in ripped up black and purple fairy costume she'd dyed; she had black wings and wand, her hair looked like a cat had slept on it. And she went around being sarcastic and putting a raspberry cushion under people and using a hand buzzer on them. My husband went as an aquarium one year. I loved the kid who took old (empty) egg cartons and made a giant lego cube. The other fun one is a Halloween date party with the theme being the perfect pair - having people dress as their favorite twosomes. My friends arrived in white boxes ( boxes again ) with black dots and they were a Pair o' Dice ( paradise ) - which was very cute until another couple came in scrubs and they were a pair o' docs ( paradox ).
