Are you planning on cutting back on your New Year's Eve plans due to the bad economy?

If so, how are you going about not spending as much on this year's celebration?

Yes, Money is tight so the usual night of downtown clubbing will not be in the plans. The typical bar/club where I live is $20 to get in, then you have 4 or 5 drinks over the course of the night at $5 + $1 tip that comes to $30 if you don't buy any of your poor friends drinks, that's $50 and dows not include going out to dinner or gas money. I just could not rationalize spending over $50 for one night of partying downtown, so this year all of my friends will be having a huge house party, everyone chips in $5 for a few big gallons of hard liquor and mixers, and we set off some fireworks. for a savings of at least $45 probably more since we will be eating at home instead of trying to get into town early to beat traffic meaning we would have to get some food also. And if you have friends who are musicians you can usually convince them to play if they have a few drinks in them, now you've got free live music too. Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it can't be fun, throw in some fireworks and you've got a great party.
Asker's Rating:
• Great idea! Staying in and having people chip in for food and drinks is a great way to save money. And if you hold it at your house, you don't have to worry about driving around town and not being able to drink.

Nope. Fortunately the industry my job is in hasn't suffered as much as the majority of the economy (utility industry).

Thankfully I make it a point to go to parties at friends houses which really goes a long way in saving money to begin with. Even if this was not the case I think it is important to enjoy life every so often and New Years would be a day that spending the money would be ok in my eyes.

Yes and no. I'm cutting back, but not necessarily due to the bad economy. My wife is pregnant so she can't even party. I'm still going to get trashed, but I'm going to do it at home. So my only expenses this year are: a bottle of grey goose, mixers, 2 packs of cigarettes.

Reasonable!

No, I plan to stick to my personal tradition. That happens not to be very expensive. But, again, to your specific question: No. No changes from past years.

I most certainly will. I lost a job today so now I will be earning 1/3 less money next month then I did this month. If anything it will just motivate me to look for new opportunities.

Sorry to hear that, Jeff. It happened to my husband about 3 weeks ago, but it's motivated him to switch to a more lucrative field. And other than not getting inundated in the usual loads of useless Christmas gifts we feel compelled to give each other, it's been pretty decent so far.

We usually get together with friends anyhow, and that's what we're doing. I just went to a bunch of stores to get all kinds of things for tonight and tomorrow. I keep mentioning Trader Joe's, but that's because I shop there so much! They were packed, but I was still able to get champagne for us and sparkling juice for everyone's kids; all kinds of snacks and desserts and stuff for the meals here tomorrow (we're hosting). I think we got a total of 7 games for Christmas and several new movies on DVD; our friends will also be bringing games, movies, and food. We were all going to go to a hotel with a group that a number of us are members of, but the group canceled so everyone's coming here.

We're gaining a Wii. We're losing a crowded indoor pool. Oh, well.
