The site looks pretty old, but Princeton's site "Chess is Fun" (see link below) offers some great information about the game, strategy and links to an online Java-based chess game. There is also an extensive list of links (although some are dead, there's still a good list) to chess information on the web.

I think you'll find a beginners area there, where you can play and chat. It's a long time since I looked there myself, so I'm not sure if I remember rightly.
There are a lot of online chess sites, but they are not really for beginners. I'd avoid them until you're a little bit better. Two of the biggest and best of those are:
