Well, showing it like it was thought to be wouldn't be all that popular.
Truth is there is some debate whether it was a religious or a social issue to some extent. The mob killed her, and they were certainly christian, but the question in some minds is if they killed her because she was pagan, or if it was a matter of a resentful underclass having a good excuse to kill a member of a rich upperclass who wouldn't even deal with them.
Thing is, on the one hand, looking at how educated woman have fared throughout history, I have no problem beliveing it was a religious issue. Especially taking into account her influence in politics. On the other, a number of her students were Christian and she certainly did nothing to use her influence with the prefect to defend the pagans who were already being attacked by the Christians in the city.
(Don't mind me, I was researching to write a novel on her until the movie came out and I realized it would look derivative...)
But honestly, I'm sure it had nothing to do with accuracy and more to do with the fact that the largest percentage of movie goers in the west are at least sort of Christian and the theaters wouldn't want ot offend or make people think...
