Black History Month is observed for the month of February because of two very important figures in the history of African Americans, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, both of these men are attributed with having birthdays in February.
Although his exact age and birthday are matters for speculation being that he was born a slave, Frederick Douglass adopted the birthday of February 14th and his birth year is thought to be circa 1818.
Former President Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12th 1809.
Dr. Carter G. Woodson proposed the idea of "Negro History Week" in February 1926 to pay respect and commemorate the vast contributions both of these men made to the success of the African American.
In 1976 this week long remembrance of Black History was enlarged to include the entire month of February.
