Why do we hang on to our history so tightly, even when we haven't learned our lesson and keep repeating the mistakes?

In fact, we tend to have a tendency to forget our own history. It is the educated in our societies that cling to history, and rarely are the educated condemned to repeating it.

There are obvious exception (ahem George W. Bush ahem)
