There are multiple candidates for the title "inventor of the bra," most of them female. They include:

Clara P. Clark (US), 1874
Olivia P. Flynt (US), 1876
Charles Moorehouse, 1885
Herminie Cadolle (France), 1889

Marie Tucek obtained the first US patent for a recognizably modern bra in 1893 but did not market her invention. In 1913, Mary Phelps Jacob and her maid, Marie, fashioned a bra out of two handkerchiefs, some ribbon, and some cord because existing undergarments would have ruined the lines of her new evening gown. Ms. Jacob received a patent in 1914 but again did not market her product and sold her patent rights to the Warner Brothers Corset Company for $1500.
