Malcolm is probably most famous for his death. His assassination brought the Nation of Islam and Malcolm X's struggles with it to the forefront of the main stream news. Malcolm X was much less trusted among African-Americans in the South (who were followers of Martin Luther King, Jr.) than those in the urban north, especially Boston and New York City. Additionally, his assassination was part of a string of political assassinations in the United States that lasted from about 1963 to about 1968.
In some ways, he was the mirror of George Wallace (who was shot but survived). Both were supremacists. Yet both came to regret their early belief in the separation of the races.
