My favorite is from the immortal words of Socrates: "I drank WHAT?"

Why is it significant? Because laughing at our mortality signifies our abilities to consider the concept of a future and mortality and, the best human trait, humor. This is what sets us apart from the animals.

Isn't this a quote from the movie 'Real Genius', not truly Socrates?

Mitch: What are you doing?
Chris Knight: Self-realization. I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, "... I drank what?"

A fifth of Americans can't locate the US on a world map?

Can't find a source for that, thank God. I think it's a myth that got traction.

According to this:

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/roper2006/pdf/FINALReport2006GeogLitsurvey.pdf

94% of Americans aged 18-24 can locate the US on a world map.

However only 37% can locate Iraq on a Middle East map, and only 25% can locate Israel on the same map.

And only 36% can locate the UK on a world map.

Also only 50% can locate New York State, on a US map, and only 43% can locate Ohio.

Also interesting:

Caution: Wet Paint

Seriously though, this takes thinking,I keep trying to think of something profound, I keep thinking of things that are the most significant statements in American history, but that's not the question.

I agree with the person who posted "I love you" , its the little things that can have the most impact. "thank you", " I'm Sorry", "Good job", Its these statements, when uttered with meaning (which is key) that are the most powerful in my opinion.

Choosing just one statement though : "I'm here for you." , A deeper way of saying "I love you"

I personally like the formulation of the Golden Rule (or Ethic of Reciprocity http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethic_of_reciprocity) attributed to Hillel the Elder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillel_the_Elder):

"That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn."

I think the first part is pretty much universal, in one form or another. The second part is a little bit Judaism-specific, but I think it can easily be universalized. After all, the Golden Rule by itself is highly useful, but doesn't *quite* capture everything one needs to know about the world and interacting with others. It is a universal statement that learning, work, and exploration are necessary for a complete life.

Whether you take this formulation or one of many others, the Golden Rule is widely accepted as a foundational moral/ethical principle.

"Hang on a minute lads - I've got a great idea."

Ok, that was said in a movie by Michael Caine.

But the millions of times someone's said something like that all taken together would add up to something very significant!

Prefiero morir de pie que vivir siempre arrodillado
(It's better to die upon your feet than to live upon your knees!)
-Emiliano Zapata

So This is the first thing that came to mind and after an Hour of looking at tons of other worthy statements I came to realise that this one means more to me than anything else. I have a revolutionary spirit in me, ive been told this numerous times in school, work and life. This statement is significant, because if we conforme, if we bend, if we stop living life the way its meant to be lived than we are not living.

Heres a list of the other note worthy statements:
I want to die a slave to principles. Not to men
-Emiliano Zapata
I know you are here to kill me. Shoot, coward, you are only going to kill a man
-Che Guevara
The life of a single human being is worth a million times more than all the property of the richest man on earth
-Che Guevara
And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years
-Abraham Lincoln:
The irony of man's condition is that the deepest need is to be free of the anxiety of death and annihilation; but it is life itself which awakens it, and so we must shrink from being fully alive.
-Ernest Becker:
You don't get to choose how you're going to die. Or when. You can only decide how you're going to live. Now.
-Joan Baez:
Well, I'm the best there is. Plain and simple, when I wake up in the morning I piss excellence.
-will Ferrell

"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place... and I don´t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently, if you let it. You, me or nobody, is gonna hit as hard as life. But ain't about how hard you hit... It's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward... how much you can take, and keep moving forward. That´s how winning is done. Now, if you know what you worth, go out and get what you worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hits. And not pointing fingers saying: You ain´t what you wanna be because of him or her or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain´t you! You´re better than that!"
Rocky Balboa. Talking to his son. This speech motivates me every time!

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be.
- Kurt Vonnegut, Mother Night

Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome.
- Isaac Asimov

I'll be more enthusiastic about encouraging thinking outside the box when there's evidence of any thinking going on inside it.
- Terry Pratchett

If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace.
- John Lennon (1940 - 1980)

It's tough to pick one that is the best, but those are the one's I got as an influence.

"Here."
As in the first time someone offered what they had.
Probably went something like..."Here, have some of this gopher I hunted. I don't need all of it."
That began the symptoms of civilization.

The world could be driven on those words. All just and meaningful dreams could become reality.
