In July 1919, Hitler was appointed a Verbindungsmann (police spy) of an Aufklärungskommando (Intelligence Commando) of the Reichswehr, both to influence other soldiers and to infiltrate a small party, the German Workers' Party (DAP). During his inspection of the party, Hitler was impressed with founder Anton Drexler's anti-semitic, nationalist, anti-capitalist and anti-Marxist ideas, which favoured a strong active government, a "non-Jewish" version of socialism and mutual solidarity of all members of society. Drexler was impressed with Hitler's oratory skills and invited him to join the party. Hitler joined DAP on 12 September 1919 and became party's 55th member. He was also made the seventh member of the executive committee. Years later, he claimed to be the party's seventh overall member, but it has been established that this claim is false.

1919 was a big year. The British consolidated influence in Baghdad as a cursory step towards establishing their mandate over Mesopotamia, and enforced their mandate over Germany and East Africa while loosening control over India and allowing that country to form its own governing parliament. Afghanistan declared Jihad against the British and invaded India, only to be quickly and devastatingly thrown back, the holy war ending shortly thereafter in a tentative peace. Several key battles between the Bolsheviks and Loyalists in Russia took place, while the Allies declared they would not support the Czarists with anything more than financing and supply.
The Versailles Peace Conference opened in Paris -which Germany would not sign leading to Philipp Scheidemann's resignation and the scuttling of the German fleet (China would also refuse, but without suffering significant reprisal as eventually would the the US Senate without reservation late in the year). Austria ratified a new constitution and opted to ally with Germany. The League of Nations, for better or worse, was born at least as far as conceptual framework and officially founded though the still in a fledgling state. The allied powers acknowledged the perpetual neutrality of the Swiss. The Philippines sent a delegation to the United States requesting the promise of unconditional independence be fulfilled -while the US would go on to occupy Honduras and Costa Rico after both country suffer from destabilising insurrections.
Yet, personally, the most significant event of that year to me would be the passing of former President Theodore Roosevelt.
