Seward, who was laid up in bed after suffering very serious injuries in a carriage accident, was also attacked by one of the co-conspirators working with John Wilkes Booth (they intended to kill every member of Lincoln's Cabinet, if all had gone to plan).
Seward (and his family and caregivers) were attacked by a man wielding a knife that forced his way into the home. Seward was hacked and stabbed so viciously that he looked like a pile of ground meat when the attacker was done. At first his family didn't even know he was still in the bed, because it was such a gory pile.
But he lived! Somehow the man lived and remained in his Cabinet position throughout Johnson's term
THAT is how I can always remember William H. Seward.

William H. Seward. He's fairly easy to remember because I recently read a book detailing the night of Lincoln's assassination. Seward, who was laid up in bed after suffering very serious injuries in a carriage accident, was also attacked by one of the co-conspirators working with John Wilkes Booth (they intended to kill every member of Lincoln's Cabinet, if all had gone to plan).
