Time travel is the superpower that I secretly wish I had.
If one acts selfishly to correct a regret that they have there are an unlimited number of answers.
However, if a decision is made to take action for others, the question quickly becomes: "Historically, what is the worst thing that has happened?"
From my view, the worst thing to have happened is the Holocaust. So, I would start by becoming an expert of the Holocost and in a similar vein to Michael from Prison Break, I would formulate various ways to stop it. I'd likely drive my Delorean to sometime in the early '30's to begin work.

Approximately A.D. 30 during the ministry of Jesus Christ. I want to see His miracles and hear Him speak.
There is a German movie called "Das Jesus video" about the finding of a video camera user's manual in an archaeological site. The rest of the movie is about finding the video and you get to see it at the end. Considering it is science-fiction it shouldn't hurt any religious sensitivity.
Hm. Interesting premise here, that time travel *will* be invented.
Well, some of the most tenable time travel theories state that time travel can only occur within the "lifetime" of the time machine. So, you could travel into your past, but not before the machine was invented.
See this profile about Ronald Mallett and his theories and background about what I mean:

Also, keep in mind any time machine would have to be a space/time machine, because the Earth is moving around the son, the solar system is moving along the galaxy, and it means that at any given moment, Earth is chugging along at about one-quarter impulse power (1/4 the speed of light) through the Milky Way galaxy.
So, using that premise, that you can only travel through time once a time machine is invented, I'm sure there are many times in the future that I'd love to travel to, but I don't know when yet.
So, let's say for the sake of argument, time travel was invented when i was 40, and then I'm looking back at my life at 80, and time travel is something the average Joe can experience. Some things I'd like to see would be:
Birth of my future unborn children,
Visiting friends or loved ones who had died
An awesome meal I had or an awesome concert I attended
Some future historical event (like Obama's 2nd inauguration or something like that).
Visiting a place that is no longer around, due to catatastrophe
Helping out at some disaster to help rescue people (but i could not prevent the disaster, alas.)

Interesting approach.
What is considered the life time of the machine? Only after it starts working properly or when it was first designed?

When it starts working properly. Basically, it has to be turned "on" before you can use it, and the point it is turned "on" then you can go back in time to that point.
Well, that is a problem. Do we have an estimate of the starting date?
begining of the universe to se who created it
Where would you go to see it begin? How would you actually see it, as light is part of the creation?
Okay, getting past the argument that a time machine will/will not ever be invented (because if it had been invented someone would have come back to tell us, right?) then I'd have to say that I would love to go back in time and give myself some advice.
I know that this answer is very selfish, and would not help anyone other than me, but... so what? I think that I was open minded and intelligent enough about the age of 12 to listen to a few good pointers from future me. I'd love to give myself some future relationship advice, financial pointers, and some general guidance about services that would be cool (I'd invent twitter first!)
Just sayin'

I'm going back to 1985 and telling Steven Spieldberg that 2015 is not shaping up to what he envisioned when he sent Marty McFly and Doc Brown there in his movie. Maybe put some iPhones in there, and leave Pepsi in regular 12oz cans (they're not going anywhere).
