On this day in 1951 the 1st commercial computer, UNIVAC 1, enters service at US Census Bureau

"The first UNIVAC I was delivered on June 14, 1951. From 1951 to 1958 a total of 46 UNIVAC I computers were delivered, all of which have since been phased out. In 1947, John Mauchly chose the name "UNIVAC" (Universal Automatic Computer) for his company's product."

Later in 1952, the UNIVAC I successfully predicted the outcome of the 1952 presidential election, during a televised news broadcast. (so its probably more efficient than the one used in the 2000 Election..)

''The Rise of the Infallible Machines''
On June 14, 1822, Charles Babbage presented a paper to the British Royal Astronomical Society. Titled "The Application of Machinery to the Computation of Astronomical and Mathematical Tables", it proposed the creation of a machine to calculate and tabulate polynomial functions, which could then be used to arrive at various logarithmic and trigonometric values.

The paper resulted in the design of the Difference Engine. While the engine never got built (until the London Science Museum completed one in 1991 based on a later Babbage design), it led to a subsequent Analytical Engine proposed by Babbage. This latter design anticipated modern general purpose computers.

The machines have never looked back since.

The most significant event that occurred in the United States on this date was that the Continental Congress passed the Flag Act that declared an official flag of the USA.

The act said, "Resolved, That the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation."

Until that time, colonies and militias used many different flags. One of these was the "Don't Tread on Me" flag used by the Continental Navy:

Another flag was the Grand Union flag:

http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/images/f_gu.gif

The first official flag was created by Betsy Ross. She ran an upholstery business and this made it easy to stitch together the first flag. Following is a photograph of an actual flag from that era:
