Although there are a number of problems of federalism, they can all be boiled down to the idea that the states are, if not superior to, then at least equal to the union. This idea can cause massive problems, in the political system, the judicial system, the military, and any other number of places. For example, in a court case where a state law contradicts that of the US government, what would a court decide? Or in military matters, who outranks whom, the Governor of a state (as the head of the state's national guard) or the President (the Commander in Chief of the US armed forces)? The supremacy clause answers these questions in a simple manner.
