If you had asked *what* the u.s. aquired between 1845 and 1848, the answer would be: in 1845 they took by war Texas from Mexico, in 1846 they signed a deal with the Brits to have the southern half of the British territory of the pacific northwest, called the British Territory of Oregon, signed over to the u.s. if the u.s. would stay out of the northen half, which was (and still is) called the British Territory of Columbia (now a province of the Dominion of Canada), and in 1848 they ran Mexicans out and took the Mexican Cessesion, which in 1850 was split into California and the Utah territory.
