How did James Buchanan view slavery and what did he do about slavery?

Although raised in the north, Buchanan personally sided with slaveowners' rights and wanted to purchase Cuba to help expand slavery. He was said to despise abolitionists and felt that slaves were treated "treated with kindness and humanity". He endorsed a pro-slavery constitution for Kansas prior to their entering the Union and appears to have done nothing to prevent the impending Civil War.
