I am going to suggest that the name Maxine is actually a corruption of the Latin Maxima, which goes back at least 1800 years. There is actually a common French name Maxime, which is for males, derived from the same, and this may be a feminine version of that name.
For an early Maxima, see St Maxima of Rome, who was beaten to death in 304.

Historically, when was the first verifiable documented use, or appearance of the name Maxine? I would tip for a good genuine answer
Not a trained researcher, about 4 years ago I laboriously followed Google, etc, etc links & drilled down through various genealogy records to find a Maxine - someone's wife - in 14th century England.
However, I became weary and stalled there (and even forgot to log the web page & site).
