How would you define the rise of individualism in history? Does a communistic society supports individualism?

I believe it's fair to say that society is quite individualistic right now, yet how would you define individualism throughout history? The Greeks had democracy long ago but was lost through the Roman and Byzantine times. Monarchial and aristocratic based societies were developed until the French revolution and the Enlightenment and at this time people thought about the individual. Do you believe liberal individualism was the precursor to capitalism? What are your insights on this?
