Is it possible to get a University degree online?

I know that there are a lot of online colleges out there that promise to help you get your degree. Is this actually possible, and if so, do employers actually recognize an online degree?

I won't refute this... But, you CAN get degrees from colleges that are not accredited on-line. As with ANY "online" degree, you have to be careful.

Then again, you have to understand what accreditations a school has. There are only one or two that are nationally/internationally recognized.

Even MIT and UCLA were not accredited at one point...

I think that this is a pretty complete list.

My only addition is that as a contributor to a couple of online educational institutions, I think it would be beneficial for you to find out what Learning Management System (LMS) the school employs to deliver the content to you.

There are significant differences (both strengths and weaknesses) of the online systems that deliver the information to you. Knowing which one is best for you and which school offers that system should be a priority consideration.

;) I see what you mean drmatt...

I actually meant "absolutely, as long as the are accredited" in response to "do employers actually recognize an online degree".

Perception is reality. I will be more careful with my sentence structure.

Absolutely. Another good resource is a place like CourseAdvisor, which provides a central profile/application facility so that you can get all your information down once and then submit to multiple programs, after doing all the necessary research to find the one(s) that work for you.

(I can personally vouch for the quality of this place as I helped found it.)

I'm earning my degree through the University of Maryland University College's distance learning program.  It's all online, but all the exams are proctored through the college that's close to me.  It's an honest to goodness real degree, so there's no worry about it not being recongnized by employers or other professionals.  We're required to follow the same course guidelines and specifications all the rest of the university follow when they go to face to face classes.  It's a huge challenge, especially when you're used to working in a group, but it's worth it considering the time I'm saving on the commute and class time

Yes it is possible to get an online degree. When I think of online and distance education in Canada for example,I think of Athabasca University in Alberta, "canada's Leader in Online & Distance Education"   http://www.athabascau.ca/   although the University of Waterloo also comes to mind for distance education, although they have many non online distance courses also, you can "Take a few courses or complete an entire degree"    http://de.uwaterloo.ca/
Below is the online program finding resource that most people use for regular and online programs. Many programs have at least some residency requirements and they explain why that is done. There may give important educational reasons why some residency component is included in their online programs.Distance education programs can also be taught at a distance without necessarily being all taught online."Welcome to the most comprehensive and heavily traveled education resource on the Internet." says the About Us page for this site.Search for Colleges and Universities, Graduate Schools, Online Degree, Private Schools - Peterson'shttp://www.petersons.com/
What employers think of online programs can vary greatly depending on the context. Some factors to consider are field of study, shortage of graduates, quality of program, accreditation status, reputation/ranking of program, undergrad or grad program, is the online program created due to employee shortages, or is there a lot of competition for jobs, are you already employed and seeking credit for upgrading, is this considered to be a legitimate education program or a "diploma mill" etc.Gathered below are some resources to help you start to find answers for your particular situation.

EXAMPLE FOR FINDING DEGREES FOR LIBRARIANS You decide you want to become a librarian in the United States/CanadaYou find out that the American Library Association is the accrediting body. http://www.ala.org

You find out the qualification is a masters degree so you need a bachelors degree first.Since you need a bachelors degree first before a masters it is critical that you obtain a bachelors degree accepted by the masters program you want to apply to.Before choosing a bachelors degree you can check with the admissions/registrars offices at the graduate level of your choice to see if the degree is accepted for admission. When choosing a graduate program you find that when you check job ads they almost always require an A.L.A. accredited masters degree. Even if they do not list that in the job ad when you ask the employers they prefer an accredited degree. "The American Library Association (ALA) accredits master’s programs in library and information studies across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. There are 62 ALA-accredited master's programs and 3 programs seeking initial accreditation".       http://www.ala.org/ala/educationcareers/education/accreditedprograms/index.cfm       Directory listings of programs are here and guidelines for choosing the right masters program for you

You find an online A.L.A. accredited masters program - Syracuse University as one example.clicking on their Distance Learning tab it says"The School of Information Studies has been offering masters degrees through distance learning since 1993."There are nine programs and there are varying residency programs for each starting with 5 or 6 days at the beginningof the program in Syracuse, N.Y.http://ischool.syr.edu/academics/distance/index.aspx

A number of internet sites are offering diploma replacement services for which you have to pay a considerable amount of money. What you need to do is to get in touch with such organizations and send in your complete educational backgrounds. Often, such agencies provide you with a list of subject in which you can have a fake degree in. After the formalities, you can have the degree delivered at your home in just seven days!
