It's been a while since I've been in school, per se, but I am currently working on switching careers. There's a lot of overlap in the type of things that I am doing for that process and a lot of self-education.
Here's a few things that have helped me.
1. Socially networking with people who are in your chosen profession who have graduated, and those who are still in school can be helpful. Not just to possibly make connections, but to get another perspective on the process. Also to get an idea of what it will be like after you've completed the education.
2. Keeping a regular schedule is also really helpful. The Internet can be such a distraction especially for those who are in a distance learning program. Keeping a dayplanner or electronic organizer, and setting aside specific regular time to study is helpful.
3. Also make sure to take some time away from the books to have fun. Sometimes it won't be as much time as you'd like, but resting and relaxing will help prevent you from getting burned out.
4. I also listen to a lot of podcasts. It's something I can do while at my day job and still be productive there. I'll also listen to them on my commute.

How do you stay inspired to complete your education program? especially if you are working on it individually away from the school.
For example I found doing a search for the word thesis on twitter.com inspiring.
http://search.twitter.com/search?q=thesis or whatever topic I am working on. What do you do?
