Do colleges/universities award the status of valedictorian and salutatorian to students or do students just graduate "with honors"?

I would like to know how college GPA systems and award systems generally work. If the school has an honors college, is there a weighted grade point system, or does a student just graduate "with honors". I know there are distinctions in most schools like summa cum laude, magna cum laude, and cum laude, but I do not have much information on how the systems generally work. Thanks!
