What is marshmallow flavor?

I mean, what is the natural flavoring of them? What causes their distinct taste?

According to HowStuffWorks, marshmallows were originally made using the sap from a marshmallow plant. Now marshmallows are made using unflavored gelatin. Other ingredients include: Sugar, corn syrup, cornstarch and vanilla.

Sugar, mostly.

They're made of a mix of sugars and gelatin (like in jello).
