"Chef salad" is a generic term referring to a salad containing a leafy vegetable (usually lettuce, but others such as arugula or spinach are possible), a bunch of other vegetables, often pickled, and, most importantly, a lot of protein.
The protein classically has lunch meats such as turkey, ham, and salami, with hard-boiled egg and cheese added. The meats and cheese are generally diced.
Some of my favorite ingredients in a chef salad are roasted red peppers, pickled artichoke, and grated carrot.
