Basically it is a PR move. It is also not just Viagra. Pfizer and other drugs companies have had a variety of assistance programs in the past for people who cannot afford their medications for a number of reasons. This is just a new program that they are offering with different requirements. There are more than 70 medications that will be part of the program. The news services seem to have picked up on the fact that Viagra is one of the drugs being offered and focused on that.

While I know it can seem like a joke to get free Viagra, consider the situation: You are sick. You've lost your job. You have therefore likely lost your health insurance. You likely have other health problems than just needing Viagra. Now you can't even seek the physical comfort of your significant other. Could life get more depressing? The lack of/inability to have a healthy sex life can seriously interfere with the mental health of a patient.
