I think it's about media. Popular movies, music, video games, and TV shows increasingly portray drugs, sex, alcohol, and fighting as something forbidden but cool. People, especially youngster, wants to be cool and imitate these popular characters to be cool.

Hmm...Warren Zevon kind of made fun of this in "Play it all Night Long". The simple life of low expectations. Media can seriously reinforce the message, alcohol dulls the mind and restlessness (for awhile), fighting is an adrenalin pump that substitutes for the glow of achievement.

Or, maybe I'm only a nerd that likes to stay mentally sharp, solve problems, and dislikes unnecessary conflict...
