This is an outdated rule that was implemented back in 1983 when we didn't know that much about AIDS. Here is an excellent article about this. I am very against this whole thing.

This is a very discriminative rule which says that homosexual men cannot give blood because there is a heightened risk of disease.

I'm pretty sure it's something they're looking to change, which is great - people have so much trouble finding blood donors - think of all the millions they're excluding with this stupid rulei

The American Red Cross has set guidelines as far as who can donate blood and who cannot. There are many different conditions and situations which can predispose someone to infection, which would eliminate someone from being a donor. As far as homosexuality is concerned, their guidelines state that you are at a higher risk of being infected with HIV/AIDS if you have had any type of sexual contact with another male (if you are male). You can read the current guidelines at this link
