Why am I having nightly stomach pains?
For the past several nights I have woken up at various times each night with an almost burning pain in my upper abdomen. The pain is located right beneath the lower part of my rib cage, between my breasts and my belly button. I never experience the pain during the day, but I get woken up with it consistently at night.
POSSIBLY RELEVANT INFORMATION: 1) I have been taking a new fiber medication recently, however, I did not take it yesterday and still woke up with pain. 2) I just moved to a new house; 3) I just gave birth in May and so haven't slept on my stomach in a long time until recently, however this only begun in September; 4) I am living with my in-laws now and eating some foods that I don't typically eat.
Any ideas? Please, I'm desperate and sick of being woken up every night!

Possible causes of GERD include:
hiatal hernia
pregnancy
obesity
smoking
Possible cures for GERD:
stop smoking
avoid foods and beverages that worsen symptoms.
maintain a healthy weight: BMI between 18.5 and 24.9
eat smaller more frequent meals.
wear loose-fitting clothes.
avoid lying down for 3 hours after a meal.
raise the head of your bed 6 to 8 inches by securing wood blocks under the bedposts. Just using extra pillows will not help.
medications, including antiacids and proton-pump inhibitors (the latter requires a prescription from your doctor or gastroenterologist.)
For me, I occasionally have GER (gastroesophageal reflux) at night, but only when I overeat late at night (like at a tempting all you can eat buffet), then drink a lot of citrus juice, and then go to sleep! So now I avoid doing this, and no longer have any problems, except when I forget, which is rare, because it is so uncomfortable and distressing. If I do overeat late at night, I work on Mahalo for a few hours before going to sleep!

This is a fantastic answer, I would add one small detail. Tell your doctor ASAP, tests should be done to confirm that this is GERD and not something more serious.

Excellent answer and resources! I agree that it'd be wise to see a physician to confirm that you're dealing with GERD.

I would say it's a combination of everything you listed, from living in a new place, to eating new foods. What I suggest is taking a Beano, or anti-acid medication BEFORE you eat, and BEFORE you take your new fiber pills. Your body might not be able to process the fiber correctly, and may need time to adjust to your new living style. Also, try chamomile tea. It's soothing, calming, caffeine free, and tends to help me pass any weirdness going on in my stomach. If you don't have tea, sometimes drinking plain boiled water helps me too.
