There are some excellent natural insect repellents made with essential oils, which are plant-derived. They may or may not be cheaper but you can definitely find effective, safe and well-priced brands out there - your local health food store is a good place to start, or see the link below. They'll usually contain essential oils such as citronella (also added to those outdoor candles for mosquitoes when camping), geranium, catnip, lemongrass and clove, among others. While these are generally considered quite safe and effective, use with caution on young children and animals and just make sure to read any warnings. These are usually best applied to clothing, risking less sensitivity on the skin. Although they're natural, of course there's a chance that, like with anything, there can be irritation or sensitivity.
