Some of the sleep-related problems associated with Parkinson disease include insomnia, daytime sleepiness, restless leg syndrome, and retention of muscle tone during REM sleep which can lead to physical "acting out" of dreams. Sleep apnea is less common but can occur in association with changes in autonomic function. Depression is not uncommon in Parkinson's patients and can also cause sleep disturbance. Finally, as the disease progresses and medications increase, medication side effects (such as vivid dreams and even hallucinations) can affect sleep as well.
