When did exercise change to "Work Out" instead of just playing for Fun?

Why is it called a "work out"?
Why does it have to be hard?
Does it have to be unpleasant?
Where is the Fun and Play in exercise?

I guess ever since there has been more technology, people have gotten lazy, and they are online, or doing other things that require electronics.

Also what Kareul said, ever since people have learned to make money on it, people don't want to pay. But even still, you could go out for a walk with friends, manage a garden, or something like that. It reminds me when I used to go and help my grandparents around the yard, planting flowers, playing with the family dog. I miss the experience, but I have gotten to soaked up into the internet, that I don't even think about it anymore.

Not only that, but people don't seem to have the time. With the economy, anyone is looking for odd jobs to do, so they're always busy.

Maybe it's called "work out" because you're using your body to do things, more than sitting around "in" the house, you go "out" to do something

Definition for work: Exert oneself by doing mental or physical work for a purpose or out of necessity; "I will work hard to improve my grades"; "she worked hard for better living conditions for the poor"

Technically, you are "working" when you are doing things, so, you're doing things outside, and therefore "working out".

It doesn't have to be unpleasant, but people make it that way.
It's the persons point of view that changes everything, but people seem to work out to lose weight, or to get back into shape, so they see it as a hassle, and a waste of time. If they did something they enjoyed, they probably wouldn't even be thinking about it. Me for example, I love track, and I hate exercising just to get into shape, but I love the competition in track, so I focus more on winning, and not exercising.

Thanks for this question, this one has really had me thinking. (:

That is what I was thinking. You do all the work and still you pay for it. Senseless!

veddy interesting. i don't use "spas" and health clubs. i do see that as an angle being used in the marketplace, so true. @nushka, yes, senseless for some. Others need to be motivated by classes and clubs, though.

In childhood, it's referred to as play. We are all guilty of getting after our children for being so rowdy. The older they get, the more they slow down because of this. The same is true of early adulthood. We are more focused on work, school, ect. We forget to have fun, get fat and exercise becomes a chore because we have learned at an early age that its considered inappropriate to get out running and playing. Kinda funny isn't it? If we began to think of it as a fun, enjoyable activity, it's no longer that dreaded chore called a "workout". Anyway, my point is the idea of working out vs having fun starts at a young age and is a socially constructed behavior. I'm not sure if this answered your question or not, but it makes sense to me.
