Complications can include anemia, injury to the liver and/or spleen, chronic chest pain, lung bruising, pneumothorax, and respiratory failure. For a simple fracture, treatment usually includes rest, cold compresses, deep breathing exercises, and NSAIDS such as Advil and naproxen. Treatment for severe fractures is usually treated in the hospital with IV fluids, oxygen therapy, and possibly surgery. You can read more about rib fractures here

Well, as far as I know there's nothing that can be done for a broken rib. They just have to heal by themselves.

I may be wrong so I hope someone will correct me if I am!

My boyfriend went to the hospital two years ago with severe chest pains and difficulty breathing - he found out that he had two broken ribs from an accident a year before. He had taken a year to notice he had broken ribs :s

He's fine now though, I assume most broken/fractured ribs heal well over time.
