Micropump utilizes a variety of positive displacement pump technologies in its wide range of precision, low flow pumps, including external gear, gerotor, peristaltic, multiple and single piston, and sliding vane. Also available are high performance centrifugal pumps in a very compact size.

There are several types of medical "micropump." One (called a micropump because it really is a tiny mechanical pump) uses shape-changing materials on a rigid substrate to create peristalsis-like movement, allowing the transport of tiny amounts of fluid without the use of conventional moving parts: http://www.physorg.com/news82634710.html

The Micropump by Flamel Technologies is a tablet containing microparticles, which release the drug through osmotic pressure as they pass through the gastrointestinal tract:

In addition, there are various mechanical pumps of more or less conventional design which are referred to as micropumps because of their small size, some of which are used to deliver controlled doses of medication.
