I never had my tonsil removed and I clearly remember back in grade school when I would be sick about 3 - 4 times a year with accompanying tonsilitis. The main symptom was the difficulty and discomfort in swallowing (accompanied by fever).

I remember that what worked best was antibiotics (erythromycin) as the tonsils are lymph nodes, organs where certain immune cells are found. Inflammation of the tonsils (i.e. tonsilitis) means that your immune system is currently fighting an infection happening near and around the general throat area.

I wouldn't suggest that you use antibiotics with every case of tonsilitis. More often than not, it will go away on its own. I grew up in a country where antibiotics can be bought without a prescription and my parents gave it to me like you would give one tylenol (I know, scary to think of it now).

As for other solutions, I make sure that I drink lukewarm drinks and not cold drinks as it tends to exacerbate the pain. Other than that, I just rode it out.

If you have acute tonsillitis take a lime and squeeze it into a glass of warm water and add 4 teaspoons of honey and a quarter teaspoon of table salt. Avoid acid or fizzy drinks and spicy foods. Or use fenugreek seeds. There are more remedies on this page http://www.ayushveda.com/womens-magazine/home-remedies-for-tonsillitis/

That's interesting. I could never stand anything cold when I had tonsilitis. :)
