Contrary to @unwirklich, it has been my experience to be told explicitly NOT to "take both pills" the next day. If it is a pill i must take (my regular allergy pill or a temporary anti-bacterial) then I have generally been told to take it as soon as I remember it and adjust my schedule to that new regular time. Otherwise I have been under orders to consider the missed pill skipped.

Now, all that said, I urge you to contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately. They will be able to advise you on what procedure you should take. They also should have printed directions for you. These directions may advise you of what the best procedure for a missed pill would be.

@Ferg2kk, She didn't include it in her question but if you check the topic it's "About birth control" so the pill she is referring to is a birth control pill. While with many other medications it not generally recommended to double up on a pill without asking a pharmacist, it is general practice to do so with birth control.

Ah, well, my wife has been told by her gynecologist that if she misses one pill, then she must not take 2 the next day. However, if she misses more than 1 in a month, then she must report it to the the gynecologist as soon as possible.

Which pill does she use? That's why I included that the question asker here should check her particular pills instructions as they all come with a tiny paper insert. I was sure there was at least one pill out there that shouldn't be doubled up on even if most of them that's the practice. I just didn't know which pill that would be.

I've been on 4 different pills (allese, aviene, yasmin, and tricyclen) and they all also said this in the booklet... if you miss one, you take it as soon as you remember, even if it means 2 the next day. If you miss two (say, for example, Monday and Tuesday), you'd then take 2 on Wednesday and 2 on Thursday. If you miss 3 or more, you consider that the end of the pack and begin a new pack. Of course, not every pill is the same, but it's been true for all the ones I've been on.

My wife is taking Loestrin 24.
Anyway, like I said, the instructions for her are not from the box, but directly from the doctor. I have always followed the rule that whatever the doctor instructs overrides the instructions provided by the manufacturer or pharmacist (unless a medical conflict is detected...).

Of course, in lack of doctor or pharmaceutical advice, the directions provided with the prescription should be safe to follow.

Well for proper advice I would read the instructions to your particular pills. As you don't list the kind here generally yes, when a single pill is missed you take both. If you missed more than one pill or beyond general instructions can be found in source.

Yep. That's what I do...I'm still without child so it works :) My doctor always tells me if I miss a day or more, to catch up by two a day because three will most likely make you sick. good luck :)

Yes, double up the second day. If you forget more than one, don't take them all at once, but take two a day until you catch up. And if you forget more than one, use a back-up method the rest of the cycle. (This is the advice my own doctor gave me when I started on the pill years ago, thank goodness I don't have to worry about that anymore!).

I think I would probably call my doctor or at least the pharmacy to get a professional opinion specific to your particular pills. Some may be safe to double up on while others just aren't.
